Happy Birthday Rasmus Lerdorf

Congratulations to Rasmus Lerdorf, the renowned programmer responsible for creating PHP scripting language, who celebrates his 45th birthday today.

 

Born in Greenland, Lerdorf also lived in Denmark, with his family making the move to Canada in 1980.  Lerdorf graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1993, becoming a Bachelor of Applied Science in Systems Design Engineering.

 

Lerdorf’s contributions have been many, having worked on projects such as the Apache HTTP Server, fundamental in the growth of the web, he was also responsible for the MSQL DBMS LIMIT clause.  Lerdorf’s career has also involved working with organisations such as Yahoo!, WePay, Etsy and Jelastic.

 

Having authored the first two PHP versions, Lerdorf has worked in conjunction with fellow developers in the further development of the popular scripting language, and he continues to contribute in this regard.
Named in the MIT Technology Review TR100 in 2003, Lerdorf was recognised as being in the Top 100 global innovators under the age of 35, and is a regular speaker at Open Source events.
