Programmers’ Day

 

Today is Programmers’ Day, a day that celebrates programmers and the clever work they do in developing new and ingenious software that helps the modern world go round. Programmers’ Day is internationally recognised by many programming firms and technology companies across the world. Officially recognised in Russia, Programmers’ Day is also observed by a whole host of other countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

 

Programmers’ Day is always celebrated on the 256th day of the year, because 256 is the number of distinct values that can be represented with an eight-bit byte, a value programmers are very familiar with. The number 256 is also the highest power of 2 that is less than the number of days in a common year – 365. This means Programmer’s Day is celebrated on the 13th of September during a common year (this year) and celebrated on the 12th of September in a leap year.

 

 

The most influential software programmers of all time are the innovative and brilliant people who each contributed something ground-breaking to the software programming world. These are the pioneers of programming all having created, evolved or improved upon the foundations of modern computer programming. Without these software programming legends, computers, the internet and many of our favourite programs would never exist!

 

So, to celebrate Programmers’ Day you can do a variety of things, such as:

 

• Make your friends and family ‘Happy Programmer’s Day!’ cards using ASCII art
• Speak in code all day (difficult)
• Decorate a tree in your garden with 0’s and 1’s and make a binary tree
• Hold a programmer themed party!
• Tell a programmer they’re great!

 

Let’s celebrate today and be thankful for all the tremendous work programmers from across the world have done to help us in everyday computing life.
